The relationships in this book are so well done, the dramatic tension is so high and the last section had me in tears! I was rooting for everyone and was still surprised when everything came together the way it did.

this book was pure rollicking, adventurous fun, filled w/ memorable & multidimensional characters and--perhaps my fav thing abt it--crackling & witty dialogue. it's also tightly and smartly plotted--just like kaz handling a deck of cards himself--and i was often amazed at the ingenuity of it all.

i do wish crooked kingdom was at least a lil shorter, however. currently it's jam packed w/ too much stuff, and some of it wasnt all that necessary. im still hung on why the grisha rescue had to happen literally the same night as the sugar silos plan; it overly complicated things.

and while i rly like all the main characters, nina was a lil annoying and i wish she talked abt sth other than food. [redacted]'s death also wasnt as impactful and emotional as i thought it'd be; it kinda happened outta nowhere but maybe that was the point? idk tbh but this book is fun and adventurous and maybe peak YA.

Truly compelling and masterfully crafted, Leigh Bardugo is truly a Grisha, a Corporalki able to both rend and heal your heart with her cruel and beautiful tales. My friend Alice was so right to keep insisting that I read this series. As much as I hate Kaz, he is wonderfully written, Inej is epic, Jesper is hilarious and precise, Nina is witty and pragmatic, Matthias is gorgeous and admirable in his change of heart which made his fate all the more lamentable, and Wylan is adorable and his struggles of character and family are fascinating. I find this book was even better than the first with all of its swerving twists and triumphant victories coming from the most downtrodden individuals in all of Kerch. Inej’s reunion at the end Gad me close to tears and the development of Nina’s unique power was eerie and fascinating. Leigh Bardugo is a master of her own Small Science—the manipulation of words for her own incredible manifestations! When you can’t beat the odds, change the game.
