Yikes. Reading how much people enjoyed this makes me feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Where to begin? The first third was pretty enjoyable, and I found myself wondering “where will this go?” Turns out the answer is it will go into a Bildungsroman about a man growing up to be an incel who happens to have a pet Bigfoot. Hilariously, (and yes this is horror comedy but I don’t feel like this was comedic?), this book has a moment where the protagonist is trying to explain to this nonverbal creature the horrors of 9/11 in real time. We also have a deep dive into the main character’s mediocre career as a cartoonist, which takes up a solid third of the book and the creature is just, um, critiquing his cartoon panels. It was truly absurd. I found this book looking for books to listen to as my spouse and I drive through the PNW on our honeymoon, so at least we have the memories of this book describing a woman “slurping” while surrounded by gorgeous forests to keep our marriage spicy.
