Not an easy read, but edifying for anyone who wants to know what true commitment to following the teaching of Christ means.

Well, I made it through 225 pages (of 304)! And that is finally good enough for me.

Bonhoeffer's life story is incredible. His brain is truly genius-level. And ... this book is not for the faint of heart, lol. I loved aspects of it (and particularly appreciated seeing the setting/context for his quote "When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die"), but other aspects were just so heavy/hard to grasp--it's like the Silmarillion of theology, lol.

Greek words were often included (literally in Greek, which I don't read) and not defined, which frustrated me quickly. Great for those who know the Greek, but for the rest of us mortals ... what's the relevance, meaning, etc.? (Sorry for the soapbox moment.)

So - worthwhile to a point ... :)

Perhaps one of the most challenging books I've ever read. And not just challenging, but paradigm shifting. In examining the difference between cheap grace and costly grace, commenting at length on the Sermon on the Mount, defining the believer's part in this, and painting a vision of what the church should look like, Bonhoeffer answers the question of "what can the call to discipleship mean to-day?" (38)

I already know I will be revisiting this one often.
