James Harriot is the best 'animal author' - he brings tears to your eyes through his tales and also paints a lovely picture of the English countryside. I find myself missing England every time I read a work of his.

Having read James Herriots' books as a child, when I saw this at a book sale I snatched it up right away. I'm pretty sure what I had been reading was abridged in some way for children, because these stories seemed slightly more adult and more autobiographical than stories about just the animals. Regardless, I loved it, and it was wonderful soul food.

As a child, I was always enchanted by James Herriot's stories about the dogs and cats he treated. When I found this book at the library, I knew I had to read it. I was enchanted once again, but in a different way than when I was a child. There were so many more details and descriptions of the locations than what I had read before. I got a greater sense of Herriot's character and the land he called home. The pictures that were included added another level of beauty to this book.

Sadly, this is just a collection of anecdotes from previously-published books, which I'd rather have. It's still good for what it is, though.
