I did sort out what was going on early but it did not detract from the enjoyment of the rest book as the MC figured it out.

The first half of this book is great! the second half is NOT. It's almost like the author had decided the ending first but when she actually got there she decided to make it work. She had to destroy most of the first half of the book. This is also a kind of magic BAD book. The main character becomes very unintelligent the second half, anti magic ( what the heck is a librarians niece burning books - really). So the first half I might have given 4 stars , definately a 3.5 , but the second have is a 2 star at best. If you look at goodreads the number of reviews/ratings dramatically go down with each book. It makes me think even those that rated this a 5 did not complete the series. Too bad because it started out great.

Jury is still out on this one. I enjoyed the supernatural aspects; it reminded me in many ways of the urban fantasy Kitty and the Midnight Hour. I liked Lee's librarian aunt and the cat. However, despite this, it was not without its flaws. It sometimes felt like it was struggling to decide how far into the supernatural it wanted to go. Also, and this was the main problem, the culprit ended up being entirely too cliché. For a book published in 2014, it felt concerningly shallow in its treatment of a character who is
Spoilertrans and has dissociative identity disorder
. I'm still interested enough to cautiously give the next book in the series a go though.

Rating reviewed 12/26/2022.

My guilty pleasure. I order these faithfully and look forward to reading each one! Just a delightful cozy mystery series that I found when I worked at B&N. I am entertained and love that it is based in Salem, Massachusetts.
