A really beautifully illustrated poem in the form of a picture book about the way people celebrate the new year and the shortest day of the year. It's a really sweet story and in the back, Cooper explains the traditions seen in the story. I liked it a lot and would love to use it around the winter time as an alternative to Christmas books.

When I first saw who was illustrating this, I was skeptical. Not that I don't love her, but I felt it was not a good choice. Now I have the book in my hands, however, I realize how wrong I was.
This will have much more meaning if you've seen or heard the Christmas Revels (which makes it fabulous), which I have, but I think it's still a nice solstice book even if you haven't.
And if you happen to live in one of the American cities where the Revels exist and you want this kind of book but haven't seen them? Put down the book now and find out when the next show is! It's a unique and wonderful experience, and one of the few American institutions I really miss now I'm home in Canada.

”So the shortest day came, and the year died,
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.”
This poem is only twenty lines long, but length does not make beauty.
I was looking for books to buy my grandchildren for Christmas and this title was recommended by the wonderful Maria Popova (https://www.brainpickings.org/2019/12/03/the-shortest-day-ellis-cooper/). I decided they were not quite ready to learn about the solstice, but I enjoyed every page of this book.
I recommend this to anyone who is interested in splendor and loveliness in words and pictures.
