I binged on this book all in one night, the first Sandman that I have read. It won't be the last.

Oh I am going to have such a glorious book hangover tomorrow and such strange dreams tonight.

2018: Another day off sick reading Sandman :)

-------------

I really don't know how many years it's been since I last reread any Sandman, but a day off work sick seemed like a great excuse to revel again in the world of the Endless.

I now have a very happy (if still poorly) head and a well-earned bruise on my hip from where I've been leaning that massive tome for the last 4 hours.

"But... Is that all there was? Is that all I get?"
"Yes, I'm afraid so."

I started collecting these back in the early 2000s, setting aside some money from my pay packet each week so I could go buy the next volume. They hooked me and were the start of my (grown up) love affair with comics and graphic novels.
I was lucky enough to be gifted the Absolute versions of the comics a couple of years ago and I am so delighted to finally have some time to re read.

They are presented beautifully, bound in hardback with gorgeous slip cases and the retouched and recoloured pages look stunning.

The stories remain as good as ever and the characters leap off the page. Words and images are so strongly enmeshed and they combine to tell rich, dark strange stories that will stay with you long after you close the book.

Passengers, 24Hours, Sound and Fury and The Sound of Her Wings are absolutely incredible and remain stand out stories here.
Even the tales that seem throw away like Midsummer night's dream or the story of Job Gadling are important as they lay down the threads of later stories.

This remains one of my favourite comics series and I cannot recommend reading it highly enough if you are interested in stories and ideas and where they come from.

i've read The Sandman years ago via paperback graphic novel form and loved it! i return to the series in its Absolute form, and as an added bonus i listened along with the audiobook[play] via Audible. it was a delight to hear the characters, and the story, come to life -- a wonderful experience!

Yep, I definitely have a huge crush on Neil.

This review is for the Absolute Sandman series volume one through ten

Sandman is well named-it captures the surrealistic dream nature of the series. Stories are told by creative genius Neil Gaiman with gorgeous graphics, apparently fully remastered. Just like dreams, the quality is uneven and there are some ugly nightmares, but the overall effect was amazing. Each volume has an introduction which is worth reading to help understand the impact of the series on the genre.

Edit: by accident I got some of the series with the old artwork. It's very much worth it to seek out the Absolute Sandman remastered version.

An excellent collection of the fist set of Sandman stories. I know certain people are put off by comics, but the stories here as good as any novel. The Absolute series gives you all the background and behind the scenes info you could ask for as well. A must for any fan.

It's a collection, not a graphic novel; so some cohesiveness is lost in the format. Still, the characters and the universe (especially the universe) are interesting enough to warrant a read and my continued interest.
