I last read this like ten years ago and I think I thought it was dull. Well done, but it didn't grab me. I think I'd kick it an extra half star, now, if I were able, but at least this time around I'm interested in reading the rest of the run.

Doom Patrol is peak Grant Morrison. It's more Grant Morrison than Grant Morrison in the MCR music videos. You've got weird superhero characters with weird superpowers, parallel dimensions, complicated plots, maybe time travel(??), and incredibly bizarre yet cerebral concepts. The characters are all flatly one-dimensional, the conflicts are all overwrought and theatrical to the point of absurdity, and the dialogue is hilariously melodramatic. It's a fun romp with a hell of a good time packed in, but the neat ideas are pretty much the main selling point.

I really expected to like this more. I recently read Grant Morrison’s semi-autobiographical manifesto on the value of comics, [b:Supergods: What Masked Vigilantes, Miraculous Mutants, and a Sun God from Smallville Can Teach Us About Being Human|10081832|Supergods What Masked Vigilantes, Miraculous Mutants, and a Sun God from Smallville Can Teach Us About Being Human|Grant Morrison|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1327885368s/10081832.jpg|14978598], and loved it, so I wanted to read some of his actual comics. Unfortunately and surprisingly, this story just didn’t work for me. The art was mostly great, and the ideas were certainly wacky, but the characters felt undeveloped, the drama kinda random, the plots unsatisfyingly incomplete, and the wackiness never seems to have a point to it. Despite my issues with it, there were seeds of interesting ideas here, and the bit of character that managed to sneak through did at least leave me wanting to see more of Robotman’s character in future issues. I’ll try to read more of this eventually, but am not particularly drawn to do it ASAP.

I first read this as individual comics when the were first published in 1989, and was a favourite reread for several years afterwards until I had a mass clear-out of my comics collection sometime in the late 90s. So I was glad to pick up this graphic novel edition to see how well the story stands up.

The answer is, surprisingly well. The "heroes" (or maybe victims would be a better word)- Robotman, Crazy Jane, Rebis, Professor Niles Calder and Dorothy are all well handled in these initial stories. The villains are suitably weird, though nowhere near as weird as this series would get later in its run, so this is a relatively mild introduction to the crazy world that the Doom Patrol inhabits. A lot of this is creepy as well as weird.

The art also holds up well considering its age - most of the four colour stories from this era look terrible today, but this isn't bad at all, well laid out and with a strong sense of style.

If you haven't read the Doom Patrol, then I would recommend this one.

Considering how many times this book has been referenced by other stories, I was really expecting more. There's a lot of interesting ideas, but there's no space to explore them before the storyline is wrapped up at the end of the issue. Some of the resolutions are nonsense, which is ironic in a book that goes out of its way to have its characters confronting nonsense at every turn. Plus, there's no good reason to be re-using plots in a book where you're free to do literally anything for any reason.

Classic kind of art but with endearingly damaged characters, lots of clever writing and plenty of action. Very cool old series.

Surprisingly good. I thought I would hate this (not sure why), but I immediately fell in love with the slightly weird characters and even the weirder story. Can't wait to read the next part.
