Zidrou is een fantastisch scenarioschrijver. Hij doet niet mee in dit verhaal, maar ik leerde JordiLafebre zijn illustraties wel kennen dankzij hun samenwerking.
Het was dus al duidelijk dat de vormgeving en de personages er Spik en span uitzien, vol Zuiderse charme. De verrassing was dat ook het verhaal van de onmogelijke liefde, via brieven over de jaren, zoveel vlees had.
Het verhaal eindigt met de gepensioneerde vrouw die haar dochter opbiecht hoe ze altijd van iemand anders had gehouden, en eindigt met het begin.
De strip verliest zijn tempo soms wat, indien hij het verhaal nog verder gestroomlijnd had was het een dikke 4, nu zou ik hem 3.5 geven.

4.5 stars rounded up. A fun read, creatively done. I feel bad for a lot of the folks caught up in their story… both characters seem rather selfish. But I guess it’s a happy ending…

"Always Never" was one of the options our book club looked at when choosing the March 2025 read, and though it wasn't the book that won the ballot, it was interesting enough to go on my TBR list.
I had the pleasure to read this as a hardback, and that definitely enhanced the experience. The artwork is superb, and the story's layout unusual enough to keep you guessing. I was turning each page, wondering what new nuance would be added to the story so far by their previous chapter. It's a non-linear story, and maybe a bit hard to wrap your head around sometimes, but a relatable one nonetheless.
I wasn't so keen on the fact that Ana and Zeno seemed to have a bit of an emotional affair going on, but ultimately people contain multitudes.
Can definitely recommend as a super cute romantic graphic novel, that manages to tell a full story in an interesting way.
