It was a well written book, but reminded me why I don't usually stray too far from romance. So much rape. War is ugly indeed, maybe I'll just read about it in the news rather than rehashing past horrors.

I found this book hard to put a rating or judgement on - the writing is hugely evocative and masterful, but I found the “twist” of the writer obvious from the beginning and to be honest, found that the character Ugwu was very difficult to read
with his sexual desires so often lacking consent and then his eventual participation in a gang rape, I just could not get behind his redemption or lack of an effort for redemption.
. I would tell someone who asked that it is a really excellent book, but don’t think it will be one I revisit. War is very ugly

Balancing flowery prose and straightforwardness, Half of a Yellow Sun is a book you cannot stop reading once you start. The characters were fleshed out fully and their complicated relationships with each other in the first half was very engaging, as though you were in the very room as them. The first part felt polished and languid, so once the war broke out and messed with the pacing, it was a bit jarring. However, it was a great tool by the author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, to make the readers fully immerse themselves in the situations. I also really appreciate the use of food as a means to give more backgrounds to the characters and their personalities, as well as a way to tell the passage of time and the shift in environment.

It was Brutal and Morbid but so beautifully written. Adichie’s writing always draws you in with such a strong force. The character development was brilliant and the descriptive nature of Adichie’s writing alwayd manages to leave me awestruck and well immersed into her books.

Based on the Nigerian- Biafran war (1967-1970). A part of history I was not familiar with. We learn of the brutality of war, acts of violence we can never imagine human beings capable of inflicting on one another. Yet it happened. We feel and learn of the hate, intolerance, responsibilities, love and hope through the 5 main characters. I wouldn't say that the characters are lovable or perfect, instead they are beautifully flawed and complex; human. I'm glad I picked up this book.  Chimamanda manages to capture the dualities of hate and love, dread and hope so eloquently in her writing. Story telling based on real life events at its best.
This book is worthy of a 5 star rating.
