A very strange read. I definitely enjoyed how thought provoking it was and how it kept me guessing. But it also felt vague and often led to unfulfilling plot turns/ little character development.

Fakat buna rağmen hep aklımdaydın Leto the second...

This is an expensive and ambitious book, which of course is what one expects from Frank Herbert. Unfortunately, its brilliance also highlights its failures in stark relief. Leto II is a, for all intents and purposes, infinitely wise and omnipotent character. Most of the book consists of his musings and mortals around him not understanding. Some of these musings do have wisdom, but some of them make very clear that Leto II is a book character written by a man in the 1980s. Particularly all of Leto II’s fixation on biological essentialism of sexes, which was especially tedious to read as a trans person. But Frank Herbert didn’t exist in gender expansive spaces, so it’s understandable, but it breaks the illusion that his character is profoundly wise when he can’t conceive of a universe beyond two eternal genders.

And then there’s goddamn Duncan Idaho. I’m sure he was a fan-favorite, which is why he kept getting resurrected. A blank-slate tough guy character that young men could imprint on. But he gets worse with every book and in this one I outright despised him. Sure, his confusion and anger is understandable, but he was tedious as hell and frustrating to read. I don’t care about him and didn’t buy Leto’s reasoning for constantly cloning him. He’s an angry, shallow bro who seemed to operate more on a fan service level than truly serve the story. And now I guess he’s ultimately elevated to a sort of deification. Moneo was a much more compelling Everyman character.

Anyway, otherwise it was an interesting read. I wanted to like it more, but the illusion couldn’t hold long enough for me to buy in.
