When I saw Maria Kalman speak with Daniel Handler not so long ago, she steadfastly refused to admit she was "creative," explaining further than all she does is draw and write down what she sees around her. Whatever she calls it, I can't think of a better, more interesting storyteller, visual or otherwise.

I admit it: I bought this book for the pictures. Kalman wrote one of my favorite picture books, Smartypants. This book didn't disappoint. I loved the illustrations, coupled with historical facts and Kalman's personal observations (about historical figures and food), from Monticello to school gardens in Berkeley.

Brilliantly insightful and informative, this book is a treat of history, art, government, and memoir. Absolutely lovely.

I read the blog on the Times website as it was published and LOVED IT! I bought this book for Erin for a Chanukah present because Maira is her hero.

This artist's rumination on American history and what it means to be American is simple and gorgeous.
