In the days before Big Bird roamed tv and childhood imaginations, how would you describe him? Sunny Days goes back to the days when the networks were asking “Can television teach?” and brilliant educators and advocates replied, “Every child in America [is] singing beer commercials.”

There was a distinct environment in the 1960s and 1970s in particular when federal programs like HeadStart and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting came to be that gave rise to children’s tv: edu-tainment that changed kids’ knowledge base entering school, and more importantly, their attitude about school, “As if they’ve already learned what school is for and what to do there.”

On it's surface, Sunny Days is a great exploration of the 70's era of Children's television, on a larger scale though, it provides a view of humanity at it's best, collectively working towards an altruistic goal.

Overall, Sunny Days is educational and entertaining for us now-middle-aged kids of the 1970s, much like the television shows it talks about. I can only say “Bravo!” to the big-hearted trailblazers who made such a difference in the lives of millions of young people at a crucial time in their development.

This book was a really fun and informative read! I kept catching myself telling family and friends cool things I learned along the way. What struck me was how children’s television (a pretty obvious good guy) was hit with criticism from both sides of the aisle. This was a great way to learn about children’s television, but also learn about social and political movements in the 70s and 80s that changed the way children were raised. I’m so glad I read this book!
