I found Charlotte and Jamie inconsistent from the last book and much less likable. The adventure was still creative and original. However, I was disappointed by the toxic, childish relationships between them for the first 3/4 of the book.

This is a fun series so far. I would have given it four stars but, truthfully, Charlotte is annoying. I am going to continue reading this series because I enjoy the complicated plot lines and most of the other characters. Now that Charlotte's issues have been discussed, revealed, whatever, I am looking forward to seeing her grow as an individual. I think she has a lot of potential. Too many of these series have stunted character development (i.e. Stephanie Plum, Agatha Raisin) and I hope the author doesn't fall victim to the need to keep her in her box. Two more books have already been written so the author may have shown development already - but I can only take Charlotte in small doses so it will be at least a month before I read the next one.

I had heard this book was the weakest in the series. I wasn’t sure what that was going to entail. But I think I found out why. About the first 30% of the book is Jamie and Charlotte having (sexual) tension that I never felt was fully explained (and it’s only been two months since I read the first one, so I feel like I should remember why they’d be upset with each other). A lot of the arguing between the two was never explained and sometimes I couldn’t understand how scenes were evolving the way they were. And that’s also the same thing for the way the mystery was solved—maybe I was reading too fast—but it felt like everyone was expecting another character to know what they were thinking so they didn’t fully explain what was going on. Which would be what happens in real life, but maybe I just need a bit of hand leading in that moment.

I don't have a really long review to write for this one. I don't think I absorb enough while listening to books to write a review. I will say that I enjoyed this one more than the first book, and am hoping the third carries that torch.
