There’s so much uncertainty surrounding this story especially surrounding the people from Owen’s past and what he meant to them and vice versa. (It brought me some confusion too about Owen’s choices surrounding Olivia and “Lady Paul”.) However, one thing is for sure. Hannah and Bailey were such strong characters and two of the best fictional characters, so despite the circumstances, their growing relationship was my favorite part of the book! It helped me push through the climax. Also, I can’t wait to see Jennifer Garner as Hannah in the upcoming show adaptation of this book! I was picturing Jennifer Garner as Patty before I knew the casting, but I’m even more excited! I see this is definitely the role for her now.

Hannah’s whole world flips upside down when a neighbor knocks on her door with a note from her husband: protect her. Who is her? Hannah’s teenage step-daughter who absolutely can’t stand her, Bailey. And after receiving that note, her husband Owen is gone without a trace.

Hannah is left questioning where her husband is, what happened to make him leave… and who he actually is. And as Hannah and Bailey are forced to tolerate each other, they follow the few hints they have to find Owen.

The Last Thing He Told Me is a suspense thriller with a slow, slow burn. It felt more about the characters and their relationships than the actual hunt for Owen. I enjoyed the first half of the book more than the latter, but the ending was sweet enough to leave me pleased.

My work book club picked this one for the end of 2021 and I'm glad I picked up the audiobook! I absolutely loved the narrator's voice, so maybe that influenced my review in a positive direction. This was slower-paced than most thrillers and I would recommend it to mystery fans over thriller-devotees. I enjoyed the focus on Hannah and Bailey's relationship and the complicated dynamics of a step-family.

Like some other reviewers have mentioned, I think more description of Hannah and Owen's life before his disappearance would have increased my investment at the beginning of the story. Nevertheless, it was refreshing to read a thriller where the relationships and emotional tension were as important as the more superficial drama!

Great engaging story.
From the first moment you’re on this journey with Hannah to figure out what is going on with her husband.

I truly enjoyed the way Hannah and Bailey were written & how you can feel both their despair and hope during this adventure.

I do think the third act of the book felt rushed and not as developed as the start but overall enjoyable.
