The Long Song looks at the end of slavery in Jamaica and the early years of “freedom”. It’s related by Miss July, and what a memorable character she is. The conceit is that her story is going to be published by her son Thomas. The discussions and debates between them about what she should say and how she should say it and their good natured bickering are humorous, give the books a distinctive tone and unique feel, and serve as a welcome balance to some of the heavy topics which are inevitable when it comes to slavery. I think Levy has done a great job of taking the primary historical evidence (all written by the colonisers) and reimagined and centred through the eyes of a formerly enslaved Black woman. This is an important story told well, with a distinctive narrative voice that makes it stand out.

This book was a difficult read at times because of its core themes of racism and slavery. However I absolutely loved the main character July who found her own unique ways of rebelling against the status quo. Fantastic read full of humour, sadness and grace. A must-read.
