As a fan of British detective stories and some police procedurals, I looked forward to my first Peter Grainger novel with some trepidation -- if it wasn't any good I'd be sad. If it was good, I'd be diverted from the massive amount of work that awaits me, because he's got loads of other books for me to read.

It was good. I'm in trouble, in a good way.

I appreciate that D.C. Smith is not a deeply damaged guy like too many of my favourite detectives. He's a smart man who pays attention and understands human predicaments. I'm going to enjoy getting to know the author through his character D.C. Smith. Very pleasant change.

Started well but the story went in a direction that didn’t interest me much. Good characters and decent start to a series.

A decent police procedural. I appreciate the absence of gratuitous in-fighting, mindless management interference used as some plot device to up the tension. They were present but didn’t take over the story.

A character study of the main protagonist, and the back and forth that I recall from tv shows like Inspector Morse, and even more specifically, Inspector Lewis and his sidekick, James Hathaway.

I’ll read more of this series. Good to listen to while walking, doing chores, etc.

Great start to a new detective series. I love a detective with defects and interesting back story, DS Smith is just such a one. The crime was interesting with many twists and subtle clues.
