Incredibly validating for me. Identifies a lot of unspoken social experiences and gives terminology to the same social issues that we still see perpetrated in new ways in the modern era. What I didn’t expect was to be so appreciative of social media after completing this book. A massive platform in which people can present themselves without the interference of a “middle man” with an agenda allows us space to ask the progressive questions and find the new and inspiring answers hooks alludes to in this collection of essays. Makes for a great reference book. I will definitely be revisiting this.

Prior to reading this book, I was wondering why the cover depicted a figure of an Indigenous person. Only until reaching the last chapter I found out the reason why, which could be deemed insufficient if we were to judge a book by its cover. Many of the chapters of this book are on the themes that hooks, may she rest in power & peace, already covered richly in her previous books. So, my five-star review here was solely, if not mostly, on the last piece about shared history between African American and Native American communities. Being consistent with her theoretical framework on the system of the United States that she coins as White Supremacist Capitalist Heteropatriarchy, hooks’ interrogation of the oppressor’s constant demand for “proof” of heritage inspires me to reclaim my Indigenous roots as well.
