The world building and storyline in this book is pretty good. I think the author has a great story ahead by setting it up the way they did. There is an enticing plot that had a good pace, there were definitely some points that were slower however. There is a good amount of worldbuilding, and some romance, but not too much (yet :D).

Personally, I did not finish it. It's by no means because of the author, their writing style, or the book itself.. what I did read (about 50%) was GOOD! Everyone is screaming about the ending which has me super curious, so I will definitely revisit this book in the future. I just was not enjoying it at the time, I do plan to revisit it and update my review.

Loved the world building and mystery in this story! Xyla is such a kind, yet lost, individual. She is loyal and loving toward her mother, and her dog, Bear.
Xyla spends her life moving around, and when she and her mother end up in California, she finally breaks the one rule her mother has had for her through her entire life. Doing so has consequences she never expected, and Xyla goes on a magical, painful, and terrifying journey in Faerie.
Xyla finds friendship, strength, magic, love, and, most surprisingly, finds extreme betrayal. Or is it betrayal? We won't know until the next book, and I am excited to find out!

I rated this 4 stars instead of 5 because I did would have loved more in-depth relationship building between Xyla and her possible fated one.

I read this book in one sitting! I love the fated mates trope and this did not disappoint. Slow burn is just a cherry on top.

Xyla ends up in the land of Faerie with her grandmother, the Queen of the Day Court. After growing up as human for 19 years, she finds out she is a fae. She is unable to return to Earth due to a deal her grandmother made with Xyla's mom. We learn the history between the Day Court and the Night Court and their centuries of battles to gain more land and power. Xyla is doing her best to find ways to get back to Earth while also trying to grow her new powers. Throughout her journey, she learns about her mother, becomes friends with Mari and meets the mysterious Night Court fae. There are some slight twists and turns, which leads us to the cliffhanger at the end!

Cannot wait for the second and third book to see the rest of Xyla's journey!
