I view Ours like I view Toni Morrison's books (in fact, I think this could be read in conversation with books in Morrison's repertoire): like a dense chocolate cake in that the text is so rich and well crafted that you can't digest it all in one gulp, and this is not a binge-able novel. I loved the ways in which Williams examines memory and the past through the lens of magical realism, asking how Black folks approached freedom, and considering whether clinging to a certain understanding of freedom can itself be a type of bondage. Saint's character is fascinating to me, and I honestly loved seeing her own psyche and insecurities play out on the page. So well done.
Given how rich each of the sentences are, I felt a bit overwhelmed by the length, but in either event this was such a tremendous book....bound to be a literary classic for sure. So incredibly glad I got to experience it.
Thanks so much to Viking for the ARC, I went ahead and preordered it too because I needed to have a finished copy of this masterpiece!!
