I love the Alex Rider series and every book gets 5 stars from me! Absolutely clear. I re-read Eagle Strike for the first time after many years just after its TV adaptation was released. I was surprised that the show stuck so closely to the plot of the book, which I didn’t remember. Eagle Strike has great source material.

The plus points: Alex taking action on his own. More interactions between Alex and Yassen. The ending was the best part of the book.

The strange points: Jack and Alex’ relationship in Eagle Strike does not make sense – sometimes she’s really involved and even accompanies Alex, but she also lets him go off alone and Alex does not tell her crucial information about Smithers, Yassen, his feelings,... She’s really involved in the middle of the novel but disappears before the end.

Damian Cray’s character was all over the place.

Sabina’s character was off as well. Her only interests are made out to be boys, makeup, etc in a very superficial way. Her scenes with Alex should hold a lot of emotions, but it is not really conveyed and it’s never really clear what Sabina’s feelings are and what Alex feels about her. Also, they really glossed over the fact that technically SHE saved the world.

Luckily these weak links are remedied in the adaptation and following volumes. There’s a lot of action and scheming. Maybe it’s even too chaotic and thrilling at times! It’s a fast-paced adventure that’s even better presented on TV.

This time Alex is saving the world from someone smart enough to be posing as a philanthropist. The lure and power of celebrity make this a difficult case to get the higher ups at MI6 to want to tackle, so Alex goes at it alone. Quick paced and funny---oh my gosh, the not so subtle references to James Bond culture cracked me up (his love interest is named Sabina Pleasure!)---Eagle Strike has been my favorite Alex Rider so far.

This is a YA book I read when I was 13 or 14, so I'm less willing to stand behind its quality than I am usually in a Goodreads review. I remember just the most important plot points only vaguely; I do remember, though, that it was very fun to read when I was young!

Enjoyable nostalgia read. Like if an Ian Fleming novel, starring an adolescent spy, and the antagonist had a similar evil plan to the bad guy in Halloween III: Season of the Witch. In case it’s unclear, this is a good thing.

Horowitz is mediocre at writing action (or perhaps is limited by his target audience), and there are some eyebrow raising decisions. The villain is a queeny pop star who went solo after a brief stint with a group called Slam (get it?). At one point he literally says, “can I be mother?”. And if playful homophobia weren’t enough, I gagged at the insinuation in the audiobook narrator’s voice when he said the sunbathing, teenage love interest, “traded toys for boys at an early age”.

It’s not a huge deal. That gross/weird stuff didn’t stop me from getting what I needed here. But it might stop me from returning to this well when I need a reminder of simpler times.
