I think this book shows how important unreliable narrators are in literature and life, and how we all are unreliable when it comes to recognizing ourselves despite being the only ones to do it in earnest. Our main character (oh Dostoevsky how I love and hate that you never named your most heart-wrenching characters) is paradoxical, bereft of his most sought after designs—love, beauty, loftiness—and surrounded in his most hated ones. I think, at times, he yearns for normalcy yet ends up craving for an upper hand in life, one that when given to him curls like a wounded animal in his abusive, neglectful, pathetic care. Clearly, he is no stranger to begging but is entirely loathsome of those that have anything to give.
Is he a madman or unmedicated? Fool or dangerous?
“Something within me, deep in my heart and conscience, would not die, refused to die, and betrayed itself in a burning anguish. … Something in my soul was rising, rising, ceaselessly, painfully, and refused to be still.”

It was not exactly one of the most attractive reading. The narration sometimes, especially in the first chapter, dragged on too much in ramblings, - which I believe was purposeful, a positive point in my view - which can make someone quickly get tired of reading. But, in general, it is a great book that makes you reflect well on morality and our ideals that are used to cover our real thoughts.
In the end, I liked it a lot. The protagonist is definitely not a character made to please, and I think that's one of the best points in the book.
