I surprisingly really enjoyed the way this book was structured, both parts gave me much to think about through different approaches (one was more like an essay and the other more narrative). Seems to me like quite the revolutionary portrait of a man who shows just how contradictory and self destructive humans can be.

what makes man if not the inevitable urge to descend into madness? no matter who you are, there is some part of the underground man's pathetic, unlikeable, so-human personality you will relate to, and i find that it makes notes an incredibly potent discourse on the human nature. tdrm is likewise incredible for similar reasons (albeit decidedly less nihilistic). white nights, however, is the ultimate nice guy propaganda. the dreamer would be blocked so fast — icky, gross, and anything featuring him should not share pages with a masterpiece like notes. it's only at the mercy of how much i liked notes and tdrm that i can pretend it doesn't weigh this collection's worth down.
