The last 40 pages of this book were a genuinely super good read. It’s a shame that to get there you need to read the terribly uninteresting first ~2/3 of the book

This novella follows an unnamed, reclusive, and self-loathing narrator, known as the “underground man”. This narrator is too conscious and prides himself on his intellectualism, often critiquing society for being corrupt and unbalanced. The undergound man also suffers from existential crisis, questioning life and on where he stands in this world. This one i found a very compelling read. Dostoevsky once again confronts you with philosophical ideas that make you pause and reflect. This also made me juggle with different emotions towards the unnamed narrator — I loathed, empathized, and even sympathized with him. But that’s Dostoevsky’s brilliance when it comes to writing characters, they’re always profoundly complex.
