Truly the greatest yapper of all time. Definitely not a beginner classic but a nice intro to his work.

It would be a crime to not rate anything by Dostoevsky below 5 stars. As the Underground Man once said (and actually many times), I, too, would say this book is sublime and beautiful. The story explores themes of isolation and self-destruction as our narrator sabotages himself from any meaningful human connections and delves into a deep self-loathing whirlpool. It's not that he detests human connections but he simply can't tolerate the vulnerability it requires. He's always hyper-aware of his own shortcomings and critiques rationality because humans indeed are irrational beings driven by complex emotional and psychological needs that have been ostracized by modern society. I think the main element Dostoevsky wanted to portray was how suffering is an inherent characteristic of our human lives. Although this suffering may be self-imposed at times, it is what makes us humans but often this suffering is detrimental for society's rational structure of life and often induces "failure" as many might say but what is happiness without misery?

I am reading the reviews of other readers and damn do I feel like the dumb kid in class. Reading this book felt like reading for class. I mean this in the way that I struggled to keep remembering to think of the meaning and struggled through the first half as the references went over my head. I could really only read it a little bit at a time. The Underground Man was an interesting but wholly unlikable character. To me he reminds me of modern day entitled men. To me I got the most meaning out of this book by drawing parallels to how a person like this would behave in modern day as a lot of the references of the time didn't mean much to me. So 3 stars and definitely don't be fooled by the size of this book. Its short but if you're dumb like me you need to read it slow to make sure you understand
