You see, gentlemen, reason is an excellent thing, there’s no disputing that, but reason is nothing but reason and satisfies only the rational side of man’s nature, while will is a manifestation of the whole life, that is, of the whole human life including reason and all the impulses. And although our life, in this manifestation of it, is often worthless, yet it is life and not simply extracting square roots.

Really great book, my first from Dostoevsky and it didn’t disappoint

While it doesn’t always maintain the balance between relatability and out-of-proportions depravity quite as well as I’d like, the thesis of this book and the ideas it explores are things I often find myself thinking about, and Dostoevsky explores them both lavishly and succinctly here. His prose fits perfectly for the character he’s portraying, with its prim and proper language chosen well for aesthetic and emotional rendering but a lack of sophisticated depth, a spiral of self-awareness dictated by insecurity and an inability to allow oneself the leeway of imperfection. The narrator fixates over both his “intelligent” demeanour and his unpleasant disposition, obsessing over a level of perfection he’s unable to achieve and acknowledging his own wrongdoings as some substitute for holding actual power over himself. The last 2 chapters of Part 2 are the crux of this conflict and its tragedy and are emotional and bitter, especially knowing as you read it that even now he won’t learn from this. All of us have a little of him in us, and the conflict with that part of ourselves, the doubt over whether our consciousness distorts our existence as a living being and the mediation between our man made and natural aspects remains ever-present
