Psychologically and philosophically, this is a fascinating novel. Dostoyevsky manages to create a character you despise who exposes themes and ideas you may sympathize with. The Underground Man's inaction is endlessly frustrating, but somehow inspires you to act. His unreliableness as a narrator makes you question what he says, but also think more deeply about what you read. It actually got better *after* putting it down, which is an interesting quality for a book to have.

Read this in junior year of HS. This is the one that really kickstarted my passion for reading.
