"Twice-two will make four even without my will. Surely, free will does not mean that!"
I think this went completely over my head the first time I’ve read it. Otherwise, I can’t explain how I could dislike it as much as I did.
Still, I loved the first part way more than the second part, simply because I could relate ultimately more to the philosophical ideas than this human insect's life-stories.
I think this quote sums up the second part quite well:
"[…] because I’m a rotter, because I’m the most horrible, the most ridiculous, the most petty, the most stupid, the most envious of all the worms on earth who are not a bit better than me, but who […] are never ashamed or embarrassed, while I shall be insulted all my life by every louse because that’s the sort of fellow I am!"
Dostoevsky is brilliant, and I apologize for having had a single doubt of his genius with this work of his.
