Brandon Sanderson has such a talent for creating completely unique and complex universes. The complexities of allomancy were insane given this is something he just pulled out of his head. Truly feels real. The characters were super rich and complex. Plus the whole heist underpinnings of the plot were so fun.

The best fantasy starter book even though I was upset when Kelsier died. But he makes a comeback in another book, not quite dead
- I prefer the Wax and Wayne series to this , though it’s what got me started in fantasy.
- Sanderson gets recommended more than many others. He’s great at writing accessible stories , and I will always read his work, but don’t miss out on many others great writers who are out there

Vin is a girl who has grown up on the streets. This is a monarchy/dictatorship. The Lord Ruler is a “sliver of infinity” and one of the most powerful people ever. He has his armies, his inquisitors, his obligatory, and his noblemen. The skaa are slaves.
Vin was beaten by her brother, and almost killed by her crazy mother. She learns that she is an “allomancer” which means she can “burn” or use metals in her stomach.
She is very timid until Kelsier, crew leader, and allomancer, finds and takes her in. Kelsier plans a job nobody can pull off. Kill the lord ruled, and overthrow the final empire.
Vin learns about love and friendship, and also grief. Kelsier becomes a martyr, unfortunately dying.
At the end of the book, Vin kills the lord ruler, learning she’s probably the most powerful allomancer ever.
*also*
With allomancers you can be a misting or mistborn. Mistborn means you can burn all 10 metals (pewter and tin, iron and steel, brass and zinc, copper and bronze, as well as gold and atium)
A misting is someone who can burn only one of these, and there are no gold or atium mistings.
