I’ve never read the original classic (gasp), but I can say with great authority that this graphic novel is not a favorite of mine. The dialogue seemed stilted, written in a rudimentary fashion. The illustrations were clunky.
I’ll put this on my shelf in the hopes that it encourages kids to read the original version, but I’ll not book talk it.

As with all incarnations of this, it's simple and beautiful. The art is very descriptive which is usually good, but every once in a while it's a bit over the top-people have too strong of visible reactions to things. But, the message and story is the same as always, and it's pretty great.
I prefer this graphic novel to the original novel. This helped me visualize things way better and actually made the story a story for me.
It was good, and I felt it captured the spirit of the original well. But it can never replace the original for me, there's just a little lost in translation when you drop the words.
Excellent way to re-read the book before seeing the new Ava DuVernay adaptation. The color palette is cool (black, white, and pale blue) and I especially enjoyed the Seussian visual representation of Aunt Beast.

2.5 stars rounded down.
I typically read graphic novels in one sitting, but this just didn't capture my interest as much as I anticipated. Meg and Charles' relationship is the reason it got any stars at well. One more star would have been given if it was in color like the bottom half of the cover.

This adaptation didn't move and terrify me the way the original book does, but it would be an interesting book to read with students. I think it would be especially cool to read both and compare & contrast. The text seemed a little flat, and the images didn't capture the wonder of what lives in my imagination from the novel.
