This noticeably strays from AJ's usual gritty and intense BDSM stories and isn't the most heart-melting romance. It works as a middle-of-the-road guilty pleasure, light on the angst, heavy on the sex, including a gratuitous one week menage. Dave is a mediocre Dom, seemingly forced at times, but lovable on every page.
The plot makes a speedy sprint over the relationship development, keeping the growth of the romance behind the curtain. Because you don't experience this, it feels like it jumps straight to the I-love-you's with a focus on how they plan to maintain their easy connection. The understory of the heroine's past is the root of the conflict.
The book's best thrills rely on AJ's ability to sketch a sexy scene, leaving you satiated, and as always, impressed with the writing.

the ending of this book made it hard to finish. i prefer lighter and happier times in my kink. i've read a bit harder but this one just didn't sit well with me this time. just me i think.

This was a pretty good, short and sweet read. I guess I'm just used to A. Joseph's more intense writings (and I enjoy the dark stuff more). This did have bdsm elements (the hero was a sadist, after all), but it was lite S/m in my opinion. The M/s (S/m) were sweet together, and the heroine did have a painful history that they had to deal with. I don't think I'll ever understand the sharing thing once you're in a committed, "in love" relationship, but as I've said before, I don't live this lifestyle, so what do I know? I don't let my dislike of that small part of the storyline affect my rating--just stating that for me, there's an ick factor when I read about it. All in all, I enjoyed this. It's not a series, but the next book is Fortune.
