awesome duh! a must read. there better be a sequel.
This tale of half-demon, Jael, has potential. You really feel for her…her moving around, strict dad, and out of control hair. She receives a locket from the mother she never knew on her birthday. It reveals to her images from her parents’ past. These flashbacks are well done. They are full of action and fleshed out. I felt like I was watching them on the big screen. Ultimately she is going to have to come to grips with her half-demon self, deal with an attempted exorcism, and epic battle with the demon that killed her mom. Kind of crazy, huh? The connection between the past and the present is where the story breaks down a bit. The reader is required to take a few leaps without the proper structure.
Thouroghly enjoyed this book. Good writing style and flowed well for a single book. Never have seen a book like this before and am glad that I was able to find and read this. Would recommend.
So, I just finished it last night. I noticed this has gotten mixed review, but I did like it a lot. At times I envied Jael, at times I pitied her. Just like it should be. But above all, I really rooted for her (and Rob).
Some characters severely annoyed me, at times so much so that I had to put the book (or my Kindle) down in order to escape them. I severely doubt that this was intended, but I could be just weird that way. A character this applies to would be Britt Brougher.
But there were also many very emotional scenes. I think I had an enormous lump in throat when Jael touched that hedge. If you've read it, you should know what hedge I mean. It could also have been Belial's heartlessness in the scene, but it was soo sad!
Usually I can understand why a book gets mixed reviews, even if I did like it. But this time around? No idea. I haven't read any other reviews yet, admittedly, but still! I liked the book enough to give it 4 clouds, so why ... but tastes differ I suppose.
Still, I really liked it. I liked Dagon a lot, too. I have to mention that this book works with a lot of flashbacks, which is the main reason why it only got 4 clouds. I don't like flashbacks at all, and almost every second chapter was a flashback chapter I think. A No-No with me.

Jael has lived all over the world. It sounds like a dream, except Jael and her father move regularly to avoid demons who are trying to kill her for the sin of her half-demon, half-human birth and her father isn't exactly the emotionally open, informative, or kind type either, so she's always been lonely. On her sixteenth birthday, he gives her something of her long-dead mother's - a necklace, and this necklace unlocks a lot of changes for Jael. Some are great, like enhanced senses, but it's not so great that the demons trying to kill her appear to be closer to their goal.
I liked this a lot! Jael is a well-written, compelling character, Rob was a fun love interest, and the conception of demons is interesting. I'm surprised there isn't a sequel!

Misfit by Jon Skovron follows Jael who finds out after her sixteenth birthday that she's part demon. Her mother was a powerful demon (known by many names) who seduced men with her good looks and power. She fell in love with Jael's father (a demon hunting priest) but was killed for having Jael. The story follows Jael as she deals with the implications of her demon side and the story of how her father met her mom. Her uncle Dagon provides her guidance and a little comic relief.
This book had story and a romance that were interesting to read and felt original. However there were some writing quirks that I had issues with which could have been fixed with a stronger edit. The villain was nice and evil and Jael was strong and independent (and didn't need rescuing from a boy), her boyfriend was a nice guy. The mythology was believable.
Appropriateness: Amazingly a book about a teenage succubus doesn't have any sex. The romance is healthy and there is no substance abuse. There is quite a bit of violence and scenes of torture and manipulation. The plot revolves around the Catholic church in a way that might bother devout Catholics (but I think most will not be bothered). I think the sub-plot with the flashbacks that follow Jael's parents would turn off younger YA readers. I would recommend this book to fans of paranormal romance 14 and up.

I really liked this book. Half demon-human who's father happens to be a priest. Really sad that is book doesn't continue on. It is left off like it coild continue.
If you prefer your books with hyperbolic protagonists and as many flashbacks as a Naruto episode, do I have the book for you! Aside from the problems of how they don't actually address what Hell is like or why there's screaming if no one is getting tortured, there's the issue that our protagonist has a father who's only really a character in the flashbacks and puts his daughter in mortal danger purely because he somehow thinks telling her 'here's a necklace, now don't wear it' will somehow work. And then there's the fact that she's got a great destiny, she learns to control some of her powers super surprisingly fast, and Belial, despite being an extremely old and powerful demon at this point, somehow forgets that he won't have the fighting advantage if he tries to kill our protagonist on Earth. He takes her to Hell once, just to taunt her, then never tries that again. Everything in the book felt like the perfect setup for a quirky sitcom, because plot points fell so very neatly. Also, she shaves her head, right? And doesn't get in trouble at school? Every Catholic school I know of would have had some issue with that, special demon child protection from the Vatican or no. I feel like our protagonist probably was into emo music, because she's that edgy.
And one last problem: there were several instances of random way too far moments that felt entirely there for shock value. Such as Jael's friend Britt in general, the way Belial dealt with Jael's mother, and the Mons' secret past. If you're wanting to make a commentary on the problems within the Catholic church, this was not the way to do it.

There are a surprising lot of negative reviews of this book, I noticed. No, it's not the greatest YA paranormal out there, but a lot of the criticisms I've seen seem to be a little overblown.
Yes, the third-person omniscient perspective is weird. I struggled with it at first, too, but then I got used to it, and was able to read on.
Yes, there are swear words, but not nearly that many. Sadly, I will agree that those that are used seem out of place and there just for shock value.
Yes, the romance seems a little sudden, but I'd like to point out that it's pretty obvious in the beginning.
My complaints would be that there are a few characters with less detail and dimension than I'd like, and that the main plot arc seems to be a bit hastily filled-in towards the end.
There could be sequels, but I'm good with where it ended, and I wouldn't mind if it continued, as well.
All in all, it's a cute paranormal covering something we don't see much of in the genre.
