3.5. The writing is gorgeous and the inventive horror mythology and creatures are some of the best I've read in ages. But the journey for me is a very straight one and I never once felt anyone was at risk. It read for me like feel-good folklore (despite the grisly awfulness of the villains) because I was certain the people I sympathized with and rooted for were going to triumph. The richness of it all feels like it could sustain many more novellas and I'd be down for that.
