the violence and gore that came with the book is chilling and gave me goosebumps but it also important to the plot of the story and the choices the characters make as well. i fell in love with the characters, fell in love with the writing but also need to research more and learn more as this book provoked me on wanting to expand more on learning.

I thought this was well-written and had important themes....but it was a stretch for me in terms of the horror and gore.

Not what I was expecting, but a powerful story. I suppose I should have realized that a Hugo/Nebula award winning writer’s book would include some element of fantasy, but I think I added this without paying attention to that element. Still, if you enjoyed ‘Lovecraft Country’ you’re going to love this book.

Maryse is a young black woman based in Macon, GA in 1922. Here, she has carved a path alongside fellow fighters in a somewhat underground war. As it turns out, some KKK members are less human than others, and she means to put an end to their reign of terror however possible.

The announcement of a reprise screening of Birth of a Nation happens to coincide with even stranger events than usual - events that force Maryse to confront her past, the past of her ancestors, and to make choices she never expected.

I really enjoyed this book, despite going in nearly blind on the plot. For its length, Ring Shout manages to pack quite the punch, with sprawling descriptions and a quick pace. I don't think there was ever a point where I felt confident in where the plot was headed, or the choices Maryse was going to make; rather, I was simply along for the ride and hoping that it wouldn't end with everything going up in smoke.

📚 How do I even review this book? There is SO MUCH jammed into it. It's so incredible.
📚 Clark creates such a vivid world in just a few pages, and although I'd happily read more, it's also perfect at this short novella length.
📚 There are so many excellent and terrifying battle scenes, but it's also a wonderfully character-driven story.
📚 I don't want to give away too much, but I'm here for explorations of how hate manifests and mutates.
