Not what I was expecting, but a powerful story. I suppose I should have realized that a Hugo/Nebula award winning writer’s book would include some element of fantasy, but I think I added this without paying attention to that element. Still, if you enjoyed ‘Lovecraft Country’ you’re going to love this book.

Dark fantasy dealing with important, heavy topics through a group of demons that want to take over the world. I wish this were a full length novel so you could really get to know the characters.

This was an incredibly imaginative story that weaves in elements of both fantasy and horror to create a poignant social commentary on racism & the root of hatred. A very creative, fast-paced thriller and I would definitely recommend! This was my first read of the social horror subgenre and I will definitely be picking up more.

Following Maryse in the 1920’s as she battles demons who’ve taken over KKK members. This book was inspiring and emotional. As she battles her own internal demons and those physically it really spotlights Hate and the damage it does to oneself and society. I could not put this book down and was blown away by how much was in such a small book. The writing style was engaging, entertaining and brought you into this world. Based on the book alone I will continue to read P Djeli Clark’s other work as I know his talent is immense.
