I feel like the topic of the story and the concept of the KKK being actual monsters was so unique and I had such high expectations. But then that narration just killed it for me. I don't know why they decided to accept that audio narrator, but they really messed that up big time. honestly I'm not even sure if I would be up to retrying with a physical copy because all I'll hear is her screeching. So...yeah, this was a bummer. 
I also felt like some of the parts that were very dramatic/emotional were slightly....flat? But once again, I'm not sure if that's Clarks writing or if it's this poor attempt at narrating.

I really enjoyed immersing myself in this world that is almost ours but not quite. The violence throughout and conclusion were satisfying.

this short story was paced perfectly. the setting and mysticism were articulated very clearly, and just enough time was allotted for world-building. the point-of-view of the narrator/main character added a lot of atmosphere to the novel. excellent character arcs and a very interesting concept. it's a pleasure to experience re-tellings of historical events through a fantastical lens. looking forward to reading more from this author!

the worst thing about this book is that it’s not longer. i want more. i wasn’t expecting to have so much fun with this. the characters drew me in and the lore felt so well established for only 180 pages of story. highly recommend for fans of justina ireland’s dread nation
