thought this was gonna be 4 stars but I just can't rate it lower than 5. with great characters (including a charming stud that openly flirts w/ and picks up women, loves it), some terrifying creatures and a heart-pounding climax, what more could I ask for?

I picked up Ring Shout because somebody said if you liked Lovecraft Country you'd like this. I think this rings true ESPECIALLY if you loved the first episode (he even writes about LC on his blog!). I came across the Clark's blog and he included songs that inspired him while writing Ring Shout. GUYS! *screeches* Listening to a Shout while reading this was more immersive than VR.

You know your girl loves reading books that include eye dialect (once upon a time I wanted to major in linguistics). Reading Gullah was such a treat. It's the language of the Gullah Geechee people from South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. It's closest relative is Bahamian Creole. It has over 300 loan words from several African languages, most notably Mende, Vai, and Fulani.

This was my first body horror book... Thanks I fucking hated it 💀 . I have never felt so uncomfortable reading a scene. God please erase these images from my mind. Despite all the ....mouths, I loved Clarks's monsters. Especially because they're based on folklore. As a nurse, my heart broke with the introduction of Night Doctors (wiki it!). They are beings that come into the night to steal you away to perform experiments/dissections on you. It's monster based on some truth and we all know that's the scariest type.

Little book, big story AFFFFF
