Literally every person should read this book. It is an absolute masterpiece and I can’t believe it isn’t talked about more. It does such an incredible job at mixing the sensitive topics of slavery and racism, with the intense magical realism elements. It also is a great example of a short book that does a perfect job fitting everything into a short page number. I got invested in all the characters, and understood the magical elements within the first little bit. Also, I think a lot of books would make good movies or short films, but this book would rock as a video game. The monsters are described so well, and the main character has an awesome weapon and fights in a really cool way. Plus it follows a very standard plot structure but it doesn’t feel generic at all. Absolutely incredible book.
Read from the Provo library.

I really liked this story and the horror was on point. The writing style wasn't for me though. There were times I needed more to understand what was happening and the narration would jump past it. I understand this was done for a reason, and in some cases it worked great, but in others I struggled.

Really enjoyed going on this journey with the book. At first I wasn't used to the story written in spoken speech (specifically, AAVE) but I quickly got used to it and applaud the author's decision to write it that way. It felt like the main character, Maryse, was telling a story to the reader, no fluff.

Despite its relatively short length, I was completely attached to the characters and the book made me tear up. I loved the way the story embodied the pure evil of the hatred of the KKK and cults/associations like them. They are so monstrous in their hate and the senselessness of it all. I'm super looking forward to getting to Djeli Clark's other work.

I liked the idea and the conversations in it, but it felt like so much of the (short) book was conversation about the world and it's metaphors etc and not enough plot (for me)
