A special shout-out to the audiobook narrator, Channie Waites, for not just doing a great job, but for actually singing the songs that appear in the book! I think that's the first time I've ever heard a narrator sing instead of just doing that singsong-y chant thing.

Magical fantasy with cursed swords and monsters but the fantasy land is Macon, Georgia, and the monsters are hate-filled racists who need to be slaughtered.
Loses a few points as the conclusion gets schmaltzy but otherwise outstanding. Clark does great work again and I need the film of this.

This adds a supernatural angle to real events in a way that heightens the stakes but doesn't excuse the actual historical violence. The Ku Kluxes are there because of the racism and hatred which the Klan already has, and this works so well in the narrative. Maryse is a fantastic protagonist, the resistance are a great group, and I especially enjoyed Dr. Bisset.
I wasn't expecting aftercare in a story this short but this wraps up things really well in terms of the emotional arc, with a satisfying resolution on other fronts. There's tiny moment that makes me think this could support a sequel in the same world, so if that materializes I'm very interested.

Black female monster hunters during Prohibition. The monsters are supernatural monsters that take over or impersonate Klan members [the implication being that there's not a /whole/ lot of difference there]. Some religious or folk-religious stuff. The antisemitism is because there's a character who is Jewish who is definitely on the side of our hero(ine)s, and the racial status of Eastern European Jews is briefly mentioned (in the context of being complicated).f18's review against another edition
