I cryed so much.... This book is full of emotions, we get to see life through the eyes of 5yo boy, who was born in poverty and forced to grow up way to fast.
Zeze will always have a place in my heart. So far one of the best books I've read.

I loved this book so much. I cried 2 times, one for the christmas gift part and one for the dialogue she has with the teacher. So beautifullh written. Loved the dialogue towards the beginning with uncle Edmundo when he explains to him that he's now having "thoughts" and he lets go of the "bird". Such a beautiful image.

I struggled a bit at first, I think mainly due to the way characters are introduced and I was losing track of who was who (as the translator alludes to this is a difference with Brazilian literature). I soon came to enjoy the little stories, though they are quite shocking. Although some parts were amusing, and I loved hearing from a child's viewpoint, the overall feeling is malancholy. It is so sad the way a child can be treated. The translation works well, and the choice of narrator was an easy voice to listen to. I can see why this is a classic.

Some books fly by like a warm breeze on the first days of Spring, and this book is the epitome of such experiences.
It is almost as if you become your younger self filled with confusion about life, the future and the way we have to exist as human beings.
My feelings for this book are as complicated as the relation the main character has with itself.
