It was really interesting to circle back to the first book in the original series immediately after finishing the author's latest novel. The weakest element of TFC is the reliance on coarse language to create the gritty tone the author was going for (I was particularly irritated by the relatively frequent use of the r-word). That being said, there is something that feels so authentic about these characters and I can see that the groundwork is being laid for the developing relationships that will be the focus of the next two books.
