Cried from beginning to end in the best, most healing way. The most interesting non-fiction book I’ve ever read. I would follow Caitlin Doughty to the end of the earth!!! (Read: I would read anything she writes). Part anthropological study and part world-traveling adventure, this is an honest confrontation of the American funeral industrial complex and how, in our quest to monetize death, we have lost the true value of standing in our grief. “[we must] haul our fear, shame, and grief surrounding death out into the disinfecting light of the sun.”
Written with such intelligence and the perfect amount of silly anecdotes to keep the subject matter approachable. Talking about death shouldn’t be scary. It’s a fact of life - and who’s to say it’s the worst part?
I felt held by this book, and I hope when the time comes and I am confronted with the death of a loved one I will recall these anecdotes about death and life and feel held by them again, and do my best to hold those around me and pull us all into the disinfecting light of the sun.

[Reading for Sociology of Death & Dying] This is a required reading for my class and it was surprisingly an interesting read. It definitely made me think about different ways I would want to be buried - 5/5 stars

Very interesting, well actually fascinating. Thinking about mortality becomes less scary when you know more about it. And this book made me ponder a better end.
