This could have been a good book if it hadn't been for the awful main character Bel. I don't mind morally grey or unlikeable characters but Bel was a plain bitch. She is hateful towards everyone she meets, trying to hurt feelings and making life miserable. It was difficult to root for her. I would have preferred anyone else's point of view just to get out of her head.
The mystery was well set up with twist and turns, always keeping me on my toes, unsure of what would happen next. Regarding the reveal, it was fine but everything that came after, which was 2.5 hours on audio, was too convoluted and overdramatic.
I wish we had gotten more of Carter as she was the only likeable person and seemed intelligent.
For the writing: there was a heavy overuse of certain words and phrases. I remember everyone screeching in one chapter and I absolutely hate that word.

Second time reading this book - first time as an audio book- and I still really enjoyed it, but as I knew the story I was using this more as an exercise to listen to Holly's craft as a writer. And she really is an incredible writer. Wonderful book with some really twisty elements. Ironically, the only character I don't think is fully fleshed out is Rachel herself, but I think that's partly because you spend the whole book double-guessing her actions, so you end up not sure who or what she is by the end anyway
