Confesso que tive dificuldade com este livro, eu que adoro os livros de Anne Perry, mas achei que não havia necessidade de ter mais de 500 pag. para contar esta historia, houve muitas repetições, as personagens repetiam-se e duvidavam-se constantemente, acho que nunca vi num livro tantos pontos de exclamação. Sinto falta da perspicácia do Monk e da Hester, enquanto que Oliver está apagado devido aos seus problemas conjugais.
Gostei bastante do tema, acerca do ópio e fiquei a saber das guerras do ópio com a China. O caso em tribunal foi bem conseguido, os horrores da droga representados no século XIX são problemas bem actuais e o final prendeu-me bem.
Apesar dos problemas que tive com a historia, apreciei a leitura e não vou desistir desta autora.

I really love these books but binge reading them is not such a good idea. This one falls between Blind Justice and Acceptable Loss. The thread moves sideways and explains Rathbone's ascension to the bench that he loses in Acceptable Loss. Tight as always, but some of the plot devices are repetitive. I think I'll wait a bit before the next one.

I got an advance copy of this from a giveaway, so I had not read any of the previous William Monk novels. Despite having little background information on the characters and their relationships, I found myself growing very fond of them toward the end of the book (Rathbone in particular). The mystery itself was decent, but nothing spectacular. There were a few good surprises, but overall I found it fairly predictable, and had pretty much figured everything out halfway through, which made the ending really anticlimactic.
I'm not sure if I'm going to read more books in the series. I might give the first a try to see if it's anymore interesting plot-wise.

When a mutilated woman's body is discovered on the pier River Police commander William Monk immediately starts an investigation while the people in the community fear a madman is on the loose. Yet the deeper he gets into the case the more he discovers that nothing is quite what it seems.
This is another fine mystery featuring Monk, Hester, and Oliver Rathbone. There are several twists and turns that I did not see coming, and continued character development of the principle characters make it a compelling read.

A Sunless Sea by Anne Perry is 18/24 in her William Monk series about a Victorian detective. This novel is set in 1864 with Monk in command of the Thames River Police. The tale begins with the brutal murder of Zenia Gadney. This unfortunate woman is connected to Dr. Joel Lambourn who was campaigning against opium before he was found dead by suicide. Eventually, his wife, Dinah Lambourn, is arrested for Zenia’s murder. Together with his wife Hester and lawyer friend, Sir Oliver Rathbone, he tries to save Dinah from the gallows. A historical mystery with many surprising twists and turns.

I won this book on Goodreads, turns out it was the 18th piece in the collection but it does not appear that you need to read the other books to know what is going on.
In this installment William Monk and Orme come across a woman screaming on a pier they are traveling near for patrol. Monk and Orme go to check out what is wrong and they end up finding a dead body, gutted and left for dead. The unfortunate woman who happened to discover such was questioned and sent home and that is when a long and difficult investigation occurs - Opium, Murder, Suicide, Innocent deaths of children, Corruption and Lies.
I plan on looking into the other books before this one because this 'episode' was exciting and the characters were well created/established and I hope to go on another adventure soon.
