Definitely one of the slowest-paced works I've ever read.  Poe takes his time setting the vibes just right, which means that it doesn't feel like much of substance actually happens and the ending felt sudden in comparison.

I have a history with this one, so I thought I'd fit a quick reread in to get some #valitines squares. Poe is very good with language and the whole thing stays creepy, though the ending is less emotionally affecting than I remembered. I also noticed some imperialistic worldview things that I missed when I was younger. My favorite thing about this story is the way horror is put on the house and dynastic family. I think I should try to read more gothic things, or modernized gothic things. I seem to like the tropes involved.
