Educated is a memoir that reads like an abnormal psychology textbook. Westover’s account brought two similar stories to mind — The Glass Castle and Hillbilly Elegy. If we’re giving out awards for the craziest character, Tara’s father gets the trophy. He was a religious fanatic who didn’t trust the government and bought into all of the crazy conspiracy theories that go along with that mindset. Of the three books, I enjoyed this one the most. It’s a “miracle“ Tara escaped that lifestyle, albeit not totally unscathed.

One of the single best things I have ever read, I can’t believe I was so late to this book! Incredible story from an incredible woman. I will recommend this to everyone.

Tara's memor of how she overcame her childhood of living with a survivalist Mormon father and strict Mormon family. She did not receive a formal education until she was seventeen, and she went on to earn a doctorate from Harvard . Amazing how much she overcame!

Type of read: Commuter (listened to and from work)
What made me pick it up: This one has been on my TBR list for a while, I think it was suggested in my Young Professionals book club awhile back.
Overall rating: This book was incredible. I had zero expectations, I simply wasn't aware of the content and what it was about before I checked it out at the library, but it completely blew me away. The writing grabbed you, pulled you into the pages, and made you feel the storyline. Absolutely gut-wrenching at times and extremely eye-opening. Educated makes you rethink what you've been learned to believe and living as truth.
