Excellent novel! The artistic choice to write in verse strengthens the book dramatically. The themes of relationship, love, and memory are striking and insightful. So many beautiful lines and phrases I underlined and bookmarked to come back to.

i already want to re-read this

I really thought I was about to read a novel in verse that was about a greek myth, but oh how I was in for a surprise. This beautifully written story by Anne Carson follows our protagonist as he navigates life and love, written in short segments and constantly jumping forward in time it keeps you on your feet as you fly through the already short book. At times though, it causes you to slow down and reread. It's definitely a fulfilling read.

Geryon you little red———!!

The symbolism of red—passion, fire, love, lava, desire, volcano. It’s all masterfully drawn together throughout the “autobiography.” I love Geryon’s ability to not just see beauty in one thing or another but to see the beauty in other thing because of it’s relation to another and vice versa.

I loved the one exploration of time and Geryon’s repeated musings—“what is time made of?” I read the following quote on a random site:

“Geryon and Herakles could be right next to each other and yet psychologically distant from each other; miles apart and yet occupying each other’s thoughts and dreams. Time created distance between them, and time renewed their chance for intimacy”

I’ll be scouring the internet for a while as I chew on the themes and implications of this ~novel in verse~
