Geryon is every gay boy navigating this confusing world and trying to ascribe higher meaning to the poetically mundane moments of life to try to make sense of it all. All the while grappling with the weighty question of what our redness, our wings, our sexuality really says about our own identity and our ability to be loved back. Loved this. Read on Kindle and I’m going out tomorrow to purchase a physical copy at my local bookshop.

Excellent novel in verse based on the Geryon and Herakles portion of the Herakles myth. I read it "straight" - I didn't scribble or highlight because I didn't want that to get in the way of the reading but definitely a book to revisit every few years and mark-up with notes.

“and there it was one of those moments / that is the opposite of blindness.”

“love does not/ make me gentle or kind, thought geryon as he and his mother eyed each other / from opposite shores of the light.”

im confused, but it was soft and pretty and dare i day,,, tender?

I probably missed most of nuances of this book, but I enjoyed listening to it

A novel in verse that can perhaps be described as pointillistic cinema where each poem reveals a highly specific scene described with only the most beautiful details. These moments become tied together by the overarching themes and the form of the novel itself, yet the story feels secondary to the words themselves. Carson’s writing wraps around you with the warmth and innocence of a coming of age novel as she rewrites the tragic fate of a monster into a profound love story. I’d recommend this book to anyone who is not afraid of the abstract expression of poetry being used to tell a poignant narrative.

“New ending. All over the world the beautiful red breezes went on blowing hand in hand.”
