Honestly, I didn't get it. I was pulled in by the narrative verse towards the beginning of the novel but the plot and the poetry lost its allure for me towards the middle. The Argentina sections felt especially cliche.
brilliant. love the way carson presents her ideas and narratives. there's no one like her.
It lives up to the hype--emotionally vulnerable in a way I don't know how to access, understatedly intelligent and lyrical. I would have read much more..
Having read some of her other works, and having heard so much good about this volume, and having so much respect for her as a Classicist and translator, I was really looking forward to this. I was disappointed.
While there are some striking ideas and images, the story itself seems to be more of pastiche. And little of either her personal history or her deep knowledge of the Classics comes through here. Despite the 2 major characters coming from Greek mythology. And while I realize it is imaginative, and a modernization, how do they end up in Brazil and Peru, and why? And, presented as a prequel, I can't imagine how we will come to the end of the myth - where Herakles kills Geryon for his cattle.
Fun and imaginative, I just didn't feel there was much to it, although stunningly written at times.
I will go on to her second volume on Red, and some of her translations of Greek plays.

beautiful and gay and subtle and sexyyyy, maybe one of my fav new books
I’m not sure how I feel about this book. It took me a bit to get used to the writing style but once I did I enjoyed it quite a bit. Red broke my heart. The author has a beautiful way of describing loneliness, difference, and depression. That said, reading this book was like watching Pi... I sensed it was potentially brilliant but at the same time feel as though there is something critical that I’m missing. I enjoyed the poetry of the words but can’t say that I really understood the subtext of this book.

This feels like something I will have to come back to, to rediscover, rethink, and feel again, multiple times throughout my life.
I feel like I was to listen to an audiobook of it next.
