I've been wanting to read The Talented of Mr Ripley after I realised the movie is based on a novel. I still haven’t got around to this but imagine my amazement when I came across this audio drama of all five Ripley novels.

There were five? I didn’t know. This production by the BBC adapts all to (almost an) hour episodes.

Of the five I liked the second and fourth story in how it made me rethink my understanding of Tom Ripley. He himself explains he murders people to help. The line made me stop as it was delivered very casually, where he’s convinced he’s doing a really good thing.

Ripley’s good side would have been harder for me to believe without the hints in the previous episodes. This revelation was my favourite bit.

In the final episode Ripley is haunted by the events of the first two episodes. Like the first and third episode, it was more entertaining to listen to than gripping, but the ending is perfect.

Maybe one day I will get around to reading the novels, but I’m glad I have listened to this drama to discover there is more to Tom Ripley than the movie I have watched.
